The Case For Paver Sealing

Sealing pavers is a clever way of keeping them look great for longer. We recommend sealing new paver installation as a way of protecting your investment. Or it could be as part of a paver restoration process to make tired looking pavers look good again.


Sealing helps with the main causes of paver degradation, such as atmospheric pollution, greasy soiling, water seepage, soil staining, mould, moss and even pool water.  Also, spills and stains can be cleaned off the surface more easily.


There are many paving sealers on the market. Concrete pavers can be sealed differently depending on their porosity, hardness and surface texture. Terrazzo style pavers contain concrete and stone and may require a different approach again. The best sealer choice for stone pavers may vary with the density of the stone. Paver Sealer Choices

Different paving materials and finishes require different sealing approaches. A porous concrete pavers will not be sealed with the same type of sealer as a travertine tile. Naturally your personal preferences all come into play when choosing the best paving sealer for your project. Your Jetclean technician will guide you through the complex choices and help select the best solution.

+ NATURAL FINISH SEALERS

Also called penetrating sealers these types of products are designed to soak into the paver where they form a chemical  barrier. When the sealer dries it is invisible, yet it helps to keep out harmful contaminants and liquids that cause permanent staining or damage. They also assist in slowing  the growth of algae and mould. These products are often preferred in areas where slip risks may exist. Different quality grades are available. Lower cost natural finish sealers are water repellant yet effective. More expensive solutions can also help repel grease and oils. Specialist and premium stone sealers are available. 

+ FILM FORMING SEALERS

Much like a varnish on floor boards these types of sealers are designed to offer you a clear finish. Various sheen levels ranging from matt to high gloss are available. Water based options and solvent based options can be considered as part of the sealer choice. Solvent based sealers result in a darkening of the colours and are also referred to as wet look sealers. We generally recommend against the use of solvent based sealers of this type on pavers as they are susceptible to moisture.

+ SAME DAY SEALERS

Again these sealers come in solvent and water based options. The solvent based one is often used by concreters at the time of installation however we do not recommend their use on pavers. The water based version on the other hand is a game changer that allows us to treat previously unsealed pavers immediately after cleaning. Offering same day sealing and next day protection is convenient for our customers as they can use the areas again quickly.

+ COLOUR SEALERS

Concrete colour sealers offer all the advantages that concrete paint does not. More penetrating, great coverage, long lasting and low risk of peeling. We do generally not recommend their use on paving installations, however exceptions do exist. We recommend you discuss this further with your JETCLEAN® technician.

Same Day Sealing - It Is Possible

Traditionally paver sealing has required the paver surface to be deep cleaned and dried until moisture has dissipated from the masonry. As a result paver sealing can be difficult to complete during wet winters. 

The latest hi-tech sealers however have turned the sealer choice on its head. Some of the newer sealers are less vulnerable to moisture and more forgiving under less than ideal weather conditions. One of the best hi-tech sealers even requires us to pre-wet pavers prior to application!

Paver Maintenance

Sometimes paver installations need more serious attention. Sunken and lifting pavers, broken pavers and washed out paving-joint sand can be both unsightly and a safety risk.
